TENDERFOOT SCOUT

TENDERFOOT is the first rank you will earn as a Boy Scout. The requirements offer a taste of the great adventures awaiting you in Scouting, and can give you the basic skills you'll need to begin taking part in those adventures. There is a lot of challenge in earning the Tenderfoot badge, and you might soon find yourself doing things you had only dreamed about before.

Your first campout with your patrol or troop is one of the most exciting experiences in Scouting. You might go to a park near your home or to a Scout camp far away. You might be able to look out and see mountains, farm fields, or the skyline of your city. Expect plenty of fun and adventure.

Your Scoutmaster, patrol leader, troop guide, and others will help you get ready for your first campout. (For more information on what to wear for outdoor adventures, turn to chapter 8, "Hiking," beginning on page 197. For information on choosing, packing, and carrying camping gear; pitching a tent; and preparing for a great adventure, see chapter 9, 'Camping," starting on page 217. Read about meal preparation and cleanup in chapter 10, "Cooking," starting on page 247)

Whatever happens, your first campout will be special to you. Make a few notes about it on the previous page so that you can always remember when your outdoor adventures as a Boy Scout began.
