Approach Carefully

Look around to see what caused the accident, then be sure you don't get hurt as you approach the victim. Be aware of slippery footing, steep slopes, electrical wires, traffic, and any other hazards.

Get Help

Help is usually just a telephonecall away. In most parts of the United States you can reach emergency services by calling 911, or by dialing 0 for an operator. Take a few minutes now to look in the front pages of your telephone book for information on contacting emergency services in your area.

Backcountry adventures can take you far from telephones. An injured person who can walk alone or with some support might be able to hike to a roaad. Alarge group of Scouts might be able to build a stretcher and carry an accident victim. If injuries are serious, though, it might be best to treat the victim where he is and send two or more Scouts for help. Write down the following information, and send the note with the messengers:
