10b. Show improvement in the activities listed in require- ment lOa after practicing for 30 days.
Hiking, canoeing, bicycling, backpacking-the adventures of Scouting are full of physical activity. To make the most of these and other activi- ties, you'll want to be in shape. Good fitness can also make you more alert, help you fight off illnesses, and increase your enjoyment of life.
Test your current level of fitness by doing as many push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups as you can, by seeing what distance you can cover with a standing long jump, and by timing yourself in a quarter mile walk/run. Practice each of these exercises regularly for a month, then test - yourself again. You might be surprised how much you have improved, and you will have gotten yourself into the habit of exercising regularly to increase your endurance and strength.
'To carry out all the duties and work of a scout properly a fellow has to be strong, healthy, and active. And he can make himself so if he takes a little care about it."
-Baden-Powell, Scouting for Boys, 1915
