5. Explain the rulas of sale hiking, both on the highway and cross-country, during the day and at night. Explain what to do if you are lost.

Scout hiking often takes you along trails. Quiet back roads can also be wonderful for walking. When hiking in the city, you can often travel on sidewalks along busy streets. Wherever you go, the most important part of biking is doing it safely. When on outings with your patrol or troop, always hike with a buddy. The trip can be more fun, and you will have help if you need it.

Hiking on Highways and Roads

Anytime you must hike along a high- way or road without a sidewalk, stay in single file on the left side, facing the traffic. Light-colored clothing can make it easier for drivers to see yon. If you must hike alongside a road at night, tie strips of white cloth or reflective ribbon around your right arm and leg. Even better are the fluo- rescent vests often worn by highway workers. Use a flashlight to brighten your way and to alert drivers that you are there. Never hitchhike. It can be danger- ous, it might be illegal, and it spoils the spirit of a hike.
