CITIZENSHIP

KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY
MANY AMERICANTOWNS and cities are llundreds of years old. Tiley
might llave been founded near rivers and harbors where sbips could
dock, or they might have been built along tile trails and railroad lines tllat
crossed the continent long ago. Other communities are much younger,
growing up at the edges of cities or established close to sites of industry,
agriculture, or tourism.
Most libraries have information about local history. There might be
museums or monuments honoring historical events. People who have
lived in your neighborhood for a long time are often eager to share their
memories of what your community was like in years gone by. You might
enjoy discovering why your hometown is located where it is, who started
it, and how it has changed over the decades.
