CITIZENSHIP

Boy Scouts have always stood
ready to serve their nation. Helping
out in their communities, doing
their best in school. learning about
current events. and standing up for
what is right are all ways that
today's Scouts strengthen America.

KNOW OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM
DURlNGTHEWAR OF 1812, a British fleet attacked u.s. Fort McHenry
near Baltimore. A young man named Francis Scott Key watched as the
bombardment lasted through the night. He did not know if the American
fortress could withstand the assault.
When the smoke cleared the next morning, Key saw a United States
flag-the Star-Spangled Banner-still flying over the fort. He wrote
down the feelings he'd had during the night and the hope he felt for his
nation's future. Soon the words were being sung throughout the country.
What Francis Scott Key had written became our national anthem.
Whenever you hear our national anthem played or sung, show your
respect by standing up. Give the Scout salute if you are in uniform.
Otherwise, place your right hand over your heart.
