SECOND CLASS SCOUT

CAMP SHOVEL

A small camp shovel or garden trowel is handy for rcmmring and sauing earth from a cathole. You can move hot coals with a metal shovel while cooking with aluminum foil or a Dutch oven. Don't din ditches around tents, though. Ditches are unnecessary, and they can start erosion. For guidance on choosing campsites with good drainage, see pages 232-33 in chapter 9, Camping."

2d. Use the tools listed in requirement 1c to prepare tinder, kindling, and fuel for a cooking fire.

2e. Discuss when it is appropriate to use a cooking fire and a lightweight stove. Discuss the safely procedures for using both.

2f. Demonstrate how to light a fire and a lightweight stove.

2g. On one campout, plan and cook over an open fire one hot breakfast or lunch for yourself, selecting foods from the food pyramid. Explain the importance of good nutrition. Tell how to transport, store, and prepare the foods you selected.

A fire can warm you, cook your meals, and dry your clothes. Bright flames lift your spirits on a rainy morning. On a starry night, glowing embers stir your imagination. The smell of a campfire and the crackle of burning wood are among the best memories of adventures gone by.
