SECOND CLASS SCOUT
Here are two ways to orient a map:
1:Look out at the land for features such as buildings, a bridge, and perhaps the top of a hill. On your map, find the sysmbols for thos features. Turn the map until the symbols line up with the landscape features they represent.
2: If you have a compass, rotate the compass housing until N (360 degrees) touches the direction-of-travel arrow. Place the edge of the compass alongside any magnetic-north line on the map or along the magnetic-north arrow in the map's margin. Turn the map and compass as a unit until the compass needle lies directly over the orienting arrow in the compasss housing.
USING A COMPASS AND A MAP ON A HIKE OR BIKE TRIP
Orienting a map so that it matches the terrain can give you the guidance you need to walk or pedal over long distances. Stop often to orient the map again and double-check your position.
