FIRST CLASS SCOUT
FLOOR LASHING
The floor lashing will secure the top of a table, the deck of a raft, the floor of a signal tower, or the walkway of a bridge: Lay the poles side by side on top of the stringers-the logs or poles on which your platform will rest. Tie a clove hitch around one stringer. Bend the standing part of the rope over the first pole. Pull a loop of rope under the stringer and cast it over the second pole. You might need to lift the end of the pole in order to get the loop over it. Pull the rope tight, then bend it over the third pole. Continue until all the poles are bound to the stringer, Finish with a clove hitch, then repeat the procedure to lash the other ends of the poles to the other stringer.
8a. Demonstrate tying the bowline knot and describe several ways it can be used. The bowline is among the most useful of knots because it forms a loop that will not slip and it is easy to untie. Use it to attach a cord to a pack frame, to tie a rope through the grommet of a tent, to secure a line to a canoe, in rescue situations, and in a thousand other ways. Learn to tie the bowline around a post and in the free end of a rope. With practice, you can even tie it with one hand. .
