FIRST CLASS SCOUT
Softwoods and Hardwoods
Woodworkers refer to pine fir, cedar, spruce, and other conifers as softwoods because lumber from them is easy to cut and shape.
Experienced campers know that fire wood from coniferes burns quickly with hot smoky flames.
Oak, walnut, maple, and most other broad leaves trees are called hardwoods.
They are used to build furniture and other structures requireing strenghth and durability. Hardwood camp fires burn down slowly into long lasting beds of coals.
