2 Push a stick into the ground next to where your are standing, opposite the rock. Call the stick B

4. Continue walking along the shore in the same direction for the same number of paces as before (20 in our example. Put a stick there named D.

5. Fnally, walk away from the stream at a right angle to distance between Stick B and Stick D. Whenyou can sight a straight line directly over stick C to the rock on the far shore, stop and mark your spot (E).

6. Measure the Distance from Stick D to E to get the width of the stream.

Compass Method

1. Locate an object a rock for example named A on th efar shore directly opposite from where you are standing marked with a stick named B.

2. Take a bearing by pointing the direction-of -travel arrow of your compass at the rock A and turning the compass housing until the needle lies over the orienting arrow. Read the degree (120 degrees for example).

3. Add 45 degrees (120 degrees plus 45 degrees equals 165 degrees).

4. Walk along the shore, pointing the direction-of-travel arrow toward te rock. When the compass needle again lies over the orienting arrow, stop and mark your spot C. Distance from B to C is the same as the width of the stream.
