FIRST CLASS SCOUT
WHAT IS AN ORIENTEERING COURSE?
Some troops have special orienteering courses set up for patrols to practice and enjoy map and compass skills. Many Scouts also sharpen their orienteering skills in open country, using their maps and compasses to reach destinations chosen by troop leaders.
Whether going cross-country or traveling over a frequently used area, an orienteering course can offer you the following challenges:
1. You will be given a map with locations marked on it. Figure out the best route to follow from one location to another.
2. Upon reaching a marked location, you will find a marker such as a brightly colored card, streamer, or orienteering control.
3. After making a note of the control code number and signing in on the card or using the orienteering punch provided there, determine the best route to the next point and continue along the course.
