CAMPING

In 1803 the explorers Lewis and Clark set out on a three- year Journey across America. They secured the food they needed by hunting and by trading with Native Americans. But they had to carry everything else with them- tools, blankets, medicine, and pots and pans.

Planning the gear, clothing, and food to lake on a camping trip is important for Scouts, too. Pack just what you need, and leave everything else at home. Camping win quickly show you the joys of living simply and well, just like those of old.

Where Do You Want to Go?
Every part of the United States has terrific places to camp. Your Scoutmaster will know of some. So will officials at federal, state, and local land management agencies. Look for their numbers in the telephone directory.

Camping equipment stores often have guidebooks that describe camping areas of interest, and a search of the Internet might turn up information on outdoor opportunities near you. If you obtain permission, private lands might also offer good camping. Many Scout camps can be used year-round.
